Hello, Golf

Hi everyone! Welcome to Golf Beyond Score. A blog about Golf, but not about the score of your golf game. Golf is one of the few sports and games you play where you play it with others, however you’re only competing against yourself and your mind.

In this blog, we will cover the spirituality aspects of playing golf, professional golf, and how other people connect themselves to the game of golf. Additionally, we’ll review the history of the Ryder Cup and give a preview of this year’s competition, what makes a golf Major important, and how “good” golf isn’t as good as you think it is.

Throughout the next eight weeks, we will continue to connect golf with our three main pillars: community, acceptance, and experience.

Community is bringing people together through the game of golf. There is no better feeling than teeing off with the group you’ve been waiting for all week. Additionally, it’s about growing community within the game of golf. Imagine, being on a tee box with a person that you’ve never met before and might not see again. But, for the next 18 holes, they’re the only person you have present with you.

Acceptance is the idea of accepting who you are and the people around you. Do we all wish we could hit every green in regulation or drill every “easy” putt? Of course. Is that reasonable request (without unreasonable commitment for the average weekend golfer)? Seems like that’s pretty far-fetched. So, let’s accept our position and our game and learn to appreciate where we are and grow.

Experience is getting the most from every moment and enjoying it. Living in the moment and experiencing what is happening. The latin phrase Carpe Diem is the perfect way to describe the Golf Beyond Score experience.

Golf Beyond Score might sound like a golfers only blog, but the meaning can be translated to a much larger picture of human experience.

Why Golf?

Because I love it and there’s so much more to golf than just aiming for low scores and lowering your handicap. Golf is about the experience of enjoying the moment. A while ago, I was listening to the Erik Anders Lang Show Podcast and he said something along the lines of

“You only play golf for 90 seconds in an 18-hole round. Everything else is walking and enjoying the company you are with”

Erik’s work has always fascinated me, but that quote has stuck with me particularly well. He’s spot on with that analysis, though. The average golf swing with a seven iron takes between .8 and 2.5 seconds.

So, what do you do with the rest of that time? You experience the things and people around you. (Insert golf course picture).

While not every course has the same beauty, it’s not always about the scenery that encapsulates the beauty of playing golf. The beauty might be the people you are with or the memories that the course brings to you.

For me, my favorite course is the Wedgewood Golf Club (formerly known as the Farmville Municipal Golf Course). Is Wedgewood the nicest course I have played? No. Is it the most difficult or architecturally profound course in the world? Not at all. But, it’s my favorite because of the memories that I have playing it.

Wedgewood holds special meaning to me because that’s where I learned to play golf. I didn’t learn golf until much later than most people my age picked it up. And, I think that’s for the best. Picking up golf much later than a lot of people allowed me to mature more than other people have. If I would’ve played golf when I was younger, I would’ve had these long shot dreams of playing competitively.

By my estimates, I’m around a 10-13 handicap. Do I feel confidently about my game against someone who just picked up clubs for the first time? Hell yes. Do I consider myself a good golfer? Not even slightly. It’s all in the mindset of who you are as a golfer that determines whether or not you’re good.

Some days I feel like I’m Tiger Woods, other days I feel like I haven’t ever swung before. But the craziest thing is, when I first started my “off” days would’ve felt like my Tiger Woods days that I have now.

Next week, we’ll be previewing the Ryder Cup teams and giving a history of the event. Make sure to follow @GolfBeyondScore on Instagram and Tik Tok so you don’t miss any content!
